OPTSIM was established in 2004 by Nick Marinopoulos. With over 27 years of practical experience applying simulation, optimisation and statistical techniques, Nick is one of the world’s most experienced simulation and optimisation specialists. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree, a Masters of Science degree in Statistics and a Diploma in Operations Research.
He started his career with BHP Research, where he successfully applied mathematical and analytical techniques such as simulation, optimisation, statistics and neural networks to many divisions of BHP, including the Minerals, Steel, Petroleum, Transport and Engineering business units. Within the mining and minerals industry, he has provided solutions for open pit mines, underground mines, crushing and screening plants, smelters, refineries, stockpiling operations and transport systems.
He has also worked with Fluor Daniel Simulation (which later became The Simulation Group) solving complex and computer-intensive supply chain problems using simulation modelling, for many blue chip Australian and international clients.
A three-year stint in York (UK) as Capacity Modelling Team Leader of the East Coast Main Line Upgrade provided Nick with valuable experience in scheduling as well experience in the railway industry. While living In Europe, Nick also consulted on the Holland High Speed Link Project.
